Katsucon '05

DR Katsucon Fun Facts:

1) Katsucon 2005 was DR's first ever con, happening as it did, just days after DR began being posted on the web.

2) Katsucon 2005 was the only con Pirate King Jon has attended as a DR author. (While he is no longer with DR, he might still be found at some future con, hanging out with the DR crew.)

3) The DR representatives could only attend Saturday of Katsucon 2005, but by around 1 pm that day, were already vowing that they would return with reinforcements in 2006.

Pirate King Jon (with Santineao's commentary found in parenthesises...paranthesisees...parenthesiesiese... parentheses- darn it, I give up. )

Friday: Santineao woke up inspired with ways to fix the comic, and we spent much time with the fixing thereof. (We? You packed, I drew. Oh, well ok, you did scan stuff too, shutting up now.) During which time, I was merrily *grimmace* chomping at the bit. Around 4:30 PM we finally got on the road. We did NOT get lost in DC and we did NOT go to Anacostia! (Our wonderful hosts told us that Anacostia is not a nice place to get lost in, and that its all to easy to do so coming out of the tunnel) Woot! And we did NOT take the left in the tunnel that goes under the capitol! We had good directions from our host and we did not get lost once! We arrived at about 8:00 PM and then went to out for some great Thai food on some cool green stripy tables! Those of you looking for local cuisine for next year should check out Thaiphoon. (Its only one metro stop from where they had the con, and quite pretty and inexpensive. The food was great, but a little spicy for half our group. You can find them at www.thaiphoon.com)

Saturday: Oh my gosh 7:30 AM is an unhappy hour. Especially for people who have been staying up super late every night prior to make a comic! However we had no trouble getting registered (except for a brief issue with the fact that they didn’t have the credit card machines up and running that early so we had to find an ATM), and after a tonic of coffee [hot chocolate for Santineao~ She never drinks coffee] we were enjoying life much better. (We ran into Dave Lister of Paradox Lost while in line for our coffee and hot chocolate. I sneezed and became “the lady with the musical sneeze” whenever we ran into him again for the rest of the day.) We walked up to Artists’ Alley (where we spent most of the day) and socialized a bit before getting into costume. (Mookie [of Dominic Deegan case you didn't know!] was his usual wonderful self and kept us quite amused for several whiles before we wandered off. How is it that this man does 8 Am so well? The Mac Hall and Applegeeks boys weren’t actually set up the first time we can through in the morning, but they had emerged from their rooms by the time we came back from changing.  Since our hosts’ house was so close by, and we didn’t want to wait in line in high heels, we registered and then ran back to change into costume) We didn't get to talk much with the girls from Seraphic Blue, but they were mad funny. We would have talked if we could have torn them away from the mob of fans.   Santineao dressed as the Devil, while I made our later entrance as Jareth from The Labyrinth. (Why Jareth you ask? Because I made him the costume and he looks great in it and he doesn’t yet own any anime costumes.)  Dude, people got it. I was sexy. Who really cares that Jareth’s not Anime? Artists’ Alley was the place for us. We met some of our favorite web comic people, as well as a lot of cool people we hadn’t heard of before.

Is this all the people we talked to? No. Just the ones that gave us business cards. If you talked to us and your site isn’t here and you’re wondering why, the answer is: hand out more business cards!

(Let’s be honest, we may have lost one or two as well, its not like we alphabetized them prior to leaving the con- and some didn’t have websites but they had wonderful stuff all the same. Ben Fritzson gave us a card without a website- he makes great origami. The roses were my favorite. I got a gorgeous red one. He also had tiny origami dragons~! If you have any interest in his work, we can give you his contact info. To the lovely lady that I bought a print from, I can’t find your card, but I loved your art, I hope you contact me about doing a guest comic in the future.)

We didn’t get any pictures of them, but the casual observer might have thought it was a Naruto Con for all costumes we saw!  I eventually had to ask: “dudes with the metal headbands: which anime are you from?” I do feel perversely proud that I was able to recognize about three quarters of the characters there. Oh and my favorite went around spouting “am I the meanest? Sho Nuff! Am I the prettiest? Sho Nuff.” And if you didn’t get that reference, ask for Pirate King’s short list of horrible-but-loveable movies. Sunday: We slept late. We left. We got horribly lost in DC. However a happy experience in spite of DC. Not that horribly lost~

(Our hosts found us via cell phone and gave us great directions from where we were to where we were supposed to be. Though they couldn’t figure out HOW we got to where we were from the original directions they gave us. We even managed to detour past the White house :) How touristy cool is that? All in all, Katsucon was GREAT and we’ll be going back next year~!)

Stupid Capitol.  I was just there for the anime!
